Unblurring the lines: Navigating ethics in today’s secondary music education
Robert Saunders
This presentation was given at the 2016 FMEA annual conference in Tampa, FL
This presentation is geared toward undergraduate music education majors and centers around music teacher ethics in the secondary classroom. Issues addressed include teacher–student mentorship, determining the ‘line’ of appropriateness in personal interactions with students, the benefits and pitfalls of social media use and online presence in and out of the classroom, and how to protect your rights and reputation within the unique responsibilities of a music teacher. Female and male perspectives will be presented, as well as subject-specific challenges that may arise in band, chorus, and orchestra.
